Apsis is Greek for curve or rounding.
An apsis in a church or cathedral is a rounded or multiple corner niche-like bulge of the straight base. Often you will find an apsis at the end of the choir, and sometimes also at the end of the nave (even on the west side), the trancepts or side chapels.
