This gothic town gate was built together with the Kruispoort and the (disappeared) Katelijnepoort by the architect Jan van Oudenaerde at the beginning of the 15 th century. It is therefore to be expected that they look very simillar.

A passage under a pointed arch is situated between the two towers .

On the townside the whole looks more open, with on the corners two staircase towers, and windows with cross bar frames and in the tympanums tracery in form of trefoiltracery. A statue of Saint Adrian, which should protect the town against the pest ,is located in a tabernacle above the passage.

In early days the round towers and the sidefassades carries an inner gallery with corbelingout breastwork above arched corble courses, with thraw holes. The front door and the drawbridges have disappeared also. The seperate pedestriandoorways have been addes recently.

In the great upperroom, that is covered by a diagonal rib vault there is an open fire where the guards could warm themselves.

During the night this town gate is illuminated.
