It is said that this is the smallest pub in Ghent.

Historically, this was a 'paunch house'. For hygienic reasons, it was not allowed to sell intestines inside the meathouse itself. The poor people could buy them here instead.

The name of the building points to another function that this building had (a more sinister one): behind this building the people condamned to the gallows had to wait. You can still see the iron hooks which held the bench and the hooks to which the condamned were attached in the wall of the Meathouse behind the gallows house.
