Royal City theatre in BRUGES
(Vlamingstraat 27)

The municiapal authorieties wanted to renew the area of the theatre in 1864. Therefore there was a competition in order to draw a new theatre building. Gustave Saintenoy has won the competition. He got his inspiration from the Parisian Operabuilding drawn by Charles Garnier.

The outside is in New Renaissance style. The fassade has a leaping out middle part. The balconies on the floor are flanked with Corinthian columns, and have breastwork with balustres. The attic in the fassade carries an aedicula with therein a scutcheon of Bruges. The ensemble of the horisontal mouldings and the vertical pillars ensures a well balanced radiation.

The sidewalls were kept more sober and cheaper.

At night the building is illuminated.
