The natural reserve of the Westhoek has a surface of 340 ha, it is part of the largest closed belt of dunes in Belgium. It makes a very unique natural region together with the dunes of Krakeel, the wood of Calmeyn, the dunes of the Oosthoekand the french duneregion Le Perroquet.
It is therefore not to wonder that since 1935 it is calssified as a protected region.
The sand dunesare very chalky, what causes a special fauna and flora. Since the year 70s the region suffers of drying up caused by the waterwinning of the nearby regions. Several rare plant and animals are endengered of disapearing because of this.
