In feite gaat de oorsprong van dezeThe origin of this church goes back to the Saint-Gillis Hospital and the abbey of the Holy Mary of Zwijvekerke of the order of the Cisterciënzers, that was erected by Machteld I. It is only the lowerpart of the 13th and 14th century dated tower in stone of Balegem that was kept. The rest of the tower is from the 15th century. The chancel from then has become meanwhile a storeroom.
The actual three-aisled church has a barokc facade, decorated amongst others with volutes, wallanchors and buttresses of stone which are in contrast with the facade in bricks from 1779-1780.
